In the historical narratives researched, a cultural  identity that projects itself as tropical and modern gives form with potentializing force to the concept of a Brazilian nation. I propose to reflect on the image of Brazil within several discourses on the construction of the idea of a nation, a modern concept in the social context of the Good Neighbor Policy. Carmen Miranda, who brought together specifically selected elements of the national imaginary, is taken as the privileged object for the analysis of the construction of a Brazilian identity with both national and  international dimensions. It is in the persona she performed that the two meet, provoking interpretations about the value and dilemma of the (version of) "Brazilian-ness".
